1:00 pm
Roe Jan Community Library

The City Winds Trio will perform a holiday concert for children and adults at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Roeliff Jansen Community Library. The program will include popular selections from The Nutcracker, as well as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza music.

The concert is free of charge. A portion of the proceeds from voluntary contributions will support the BackPack program at the Taconic Hills Schools.

The City Winds Trio is a distinguished classical music ensemble that performs concerts up and down the East Coast. They create a unique sound because of the unusual combination of instruments. The members include Crispian Fordham, flute; Meredyth Coleman, oboe; and Yuki Higashi, bassoon.

Hands-on participation

In addition to hearing some great holiday music, all children who attend will have an opportunity to play one of the instruments, try their hand at conducting and participate in a game and drawing project.

In a press release announcing the event, Howard Van Lenten, president of the Board of Trustees, said that “we are delighted to have such an accomplished ensemble perform at the Library as part of our Adventures in Music series.

“As is the case with all of our events, said Van Lenten, “admission is free of charge, but we are asking those who can do so to make a voluntary contribution of $10, a portion of which will benefit the BackPack Program at the Taconic Hills Schools.”

Van Lenten said that “the program’s mission is to alleviate child hunger right here in the Roe Jan area by discretely distributing backpacks containing nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to designated children for those times when other resources are not available, such as weekends.”

“I hope that the community will come out in force,” said Van Lenten, “not only to enjoy a holiday musical treat, but to help those who need us most, especially at this time of year.”

The Roeliff Jansen Community Library, which is chartered to serve Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale, is located at 9091 Rt. 22 in Copake, NY. For information on hours and events, call 518-325-4101, or visit the library’s website at www.roejanlibrary.org

4th ANNUAL HILLSDALE FLEA MARKET – MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

THIS YEAR IN THE ROE JAN PARK!

Dozens of vendors and hundreds of shoppers are expected at Hillsdale’s Fourth Annual Flea Market on Saturday May 26 in what has become an annual kickoff to Memorial Day weekend. This year the venue has been changed to Roeliff Jansen Park, located on Route 22 just south of the intersections of Routes 22 and 23. The new location will provide covered space for vendors and shoppers, as well as more accessible parking.

“We hope to attract a record crowd at the new location,” said Mike Dvorchak, chairman of the Hillsdale Hamlet Committee, which is sponsoring the flea market along with the Roeliff Jansen Park Steering Committee. “Also, at the new location there will be protection from the sun as well as no need for a rain date.”

Last year, the flea market attracted more than 600 shoppers, who were lured by bargains on goods ranging from dishes, pottery and jewelry to furniture, plants, antiques and collectibles.

Vendor spaces (10 feet by 10 feet) can be reserved for $35 each, while tables can be rented for an additional $15, or vendors may bring their own. For more information contact: Mike Dvorchak or Brian Spence at email hidden; JavaScript is required

Early-bird shoppers, starting at 8:30 a.m., will be charged $10 admission for adults (kids are free), while after 9:30 a.m. adult admission will be a suggested $5 donation (or pay what you will). The market will end at 2 p.m.

Residents also may donate gently used goods that will be sold on their behalf to raise funds for Hillsdale activities. (No cribs, car seats or other baby items, please.) The goods may be dropped off at the park on Friday May 25 from noon to 2 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the Hillsdale Hamlet Committee, which is working to improve Hillsdale’s downtown with a new Town Hall garden, a new toddler play area and other enhancements. The committee also supports the planned extension of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail from Copake Falls to Hillsdale.

Media expert Bob Sacks to discuss the future of books, reading and libraries

Do physical books have a future? How about libraries? What about reading itself?

Those questions and more will be addressed by Bob Sacks—media consultant, e-columnist and lecturer—in a talk entitled “The Past, Present & Future of Libraries & Reading” at the Roe Jan Library, 3 PM, Saturday, May 12. A discussion will follow. The talk is free and all are welcome.

Sacks’ 45 minute presentation will review 25,000 years of intellectual history by exploring the technological past, present and future of reading and publishing. In a preview of his talk, Sacks notes that “in the 21st century, there has been a subtle social change that is often missed – it is now far more important to know how to search for a fact then to actually know a fact. Being smart,” he says, “is now about our ability to seek out information in seconds anywhere we are on the planet. What is the impact to society,” asks Sacks, “when everyone is a knowledge ‘genius’?”

Inducted into the Publishing Hall of Fame in 2012, Sacks is CEO of Precision Media Group, a private consulting firm that publishes “Heard on the Web: Media Intelligence.” The daily e-newsletter delivers pertinent industry news to a diverse, worldwide publishing community of over 15,000 media industry leaders, and is the world’s longest running e-newsletter.

Sacks says that one of the topics of his talk will be the impact that electronic books are having on the publishing world and on individual readers. “Ebooks went from nothing to a billion-dollar market in a few short years. Streaming everything from the cloud is becoming the preferred way to take in films, TV, music, books and magazines,” he said. “Does this mean the death of the physical ownership, and the possession of things?”

Known locally as the publisher of the weekly Copake Chronicle, Sacks was twice elected to the Copake Town Council and has served as liaison to the Roe Jan Library and the Copake Economic Advisory Board.

Sacks is also a columnist and lecturer who speaks regularly to media and marketing industry groups with the good and bad news about what he calls “El-CID” – Electronically Coordinated Information Distribution. He is also a founding partner of mediaIDEAS, a company that provides research and guidance to the paginated media industry.

After several years in the alternative press publishing newspapers in New York and Tucson, Az., Sacks went on to become one of the founding fathers of High Times Magazine. His has also served on the boards of directors of such companies as McCall’s, Time Inc, New York Times Magazine Group, International Paper, Ziff-Davis, CMP, and Bill Communications (VNU).

free concert at the Roe Jan Library on Sunday, May 6

World-renowned pianist Lincoln Mayorga and singer Sheri Bauer-Mayorga will perform in a concert entitled Two Hundred Years of American Song at the Roe Jan Library at 3 PM, Sunday May 6.

The concert, one is a series of musical events at the Library called “Adventures in Music,” is free of charge and open to all.

The aural equivalent of a Ken Burns documentary, the Mayorga’s program surveys a broad swath of American popular music through the couple’s interpretation of works by songsmiths ranging from Stephen Foster to Randy Newman, Louis Moreau Gottschalk to John Fogerty, Hoagy Carmichael to Tom Lehrer.

Arranger and composer Lincoln Mayorga is behind the award-winning scores of such films as The Rose, Chinatown, Fame, and Ragtime. As pianist, arranger, and conductor, Lincoln made many recordings with such artists as Marni Nixon, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Vikki Carr, Mel Torme, Phil Ochs, Andy Williams, Frank Zappa, and Quincy Jones.

Mayorga has taken his diverse 18th through 21st century repertoire to more than two-hundred cities across the United States, Canada, Europe and Russia. His performing collaborations have been with such musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Richard Stoltzman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Gerard Schwarz, and many distinguished American orchestras.

Sheri Bauer-Mayorga is a pianist, vocalist, songwriter, and recording artist who has worked the underground, alternative, and grassroots scenes. A champion of American music, her career began in NYC playing contemporary American piano repertoire, including Morton Feldman, John Cage, Doris Hays, and Henry Cowell. She has worked in New York’s theater and new music scenes, and frequently appears on WAMC’s “Dancing on the Air.” Her vocal style has been compared to a range of singers from Joni Mitchell to Blossom Dearie.

The Third Annual “Flowers to Power the Parks” Luncheon at the Hillsdale Firehouse, Route 22
Sunday, May 6, 11:30 am – 2:30 pm

Close to 200 people are expected to attend the third annual Flowers to Power the Park luncheon on Sunday, May 6 in Hillsdale. The Hillsdale Fire House on Route 22 will once again be the site for this year’s luncheon, which will be held from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.

Hello, Dahlia! is the theme for this year’s event, which will feature a presentation on the popular flower from Barb Pierson, Nursery Manager at White Flower Farm in Litchfield, Connecticut. Ms. Pierson graduated from Cornell’s School of Horticulture and has been the Nursery Manager at White Flower Farm since 1998. A popular guest on television and radio, she is regularly interviewed and quoted as an expert in newspapers across the country. Barb has been a guest on WNPR’s “The Faith Middleton Show” and Martha Stewart Radio’s “Morning Living”. Her encyclopedic knowledge of ornamentals and edibles mean her talks are both enormously instructive and highly entertaining.

This year’s luncheon will once again be served by Red Barn – one of Columbia County’s top caterers. Guests will also enjoy a real treat for dessert. Julie Gale, the proprietor of Hillsdale’s At The Kitchen Table Cooking School is holding a free seminar on May 5 where volunteers will prepare the desserts that will be served at this year’s benefit luncheon.

More than 50 items have already been donated for the Silent Auction that will also be part of the event, featuring donations from a long list of the Hudson Valley’s finest businesses. To preview the complete silent auction list, visit our Facebook Event page: Hello Dahlia!

Proceeds from this year’s luncheon will once again benefit both the Hillsdale Hamlet Park and the Roe-Jan Park. Tickets for the luncheon are $45, and advance reservations are required.
In the Magical Puppet Tree’s fairytale theatre, a young fisherman helps a red carp to return to the sea… little does he know that her true form is that of a beautiful mermaid, daughter of Rin Jin, the Sea Dragon Lord. A cast of exotic sea creatures will swim in the sea of the audience during this wonderful production of a folktale from Japan.

The Magical Puppet Tree brings world folk and fairy tale theatre to children of all ages. Over 300 puppets have been created in celebration of the art of the living story and the enrichment of community life. Local musicians, storytellers, artists and puppeteers join the core troupe in ongoing exploration of puppetry art. Janice will help you spot and learn about whatever is in bloom in late April. Wear sturdy footgear that can get muddy. Meet at the kiosk by the parking lot on the east side.
