Knowing how to construct a shelter can be just for fun, or it can be a means of protection should you suddenly find yourself faced with a survival situation. No tools are needed to build a safe structure that can keep you warm, dry, and protected from the elements. Participants will learn how to decide on an appropriate location to build a shelter and what materials to collect. A great opportunity for scout troops, home-schooled families, or other youth groups to participate in a team-building project!

An annual event in Hillsdale for the past 63 years and not to be missed. The Annual Ball is Sat. Sept. 11 from 7-11 PM at the firehouse. Tickets are $12.00 per person at the door. BYOB with set-ups available.

If you missed them on the weekend, your next chance to join one of the tours is Wednesday, September 1, from 5 pm to 7 pm.  Come on over!

Let’s dip a net into the Roeliff Jansen Kill to see what might be hiding under a rock or floating on a leaf traveling down the stream. We’ll collect, sort and identify aquatic insects and have fun learning about their habitat, movement, feeding, breathing and why they are important to us as humans and to the health of ecosystems.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR:

Over 1600 visitors stopped by at Community Day in 2009, even with the extreme heat. By offering a chance to win $100.00 in free gas to all attendees, we were able to track attendance. We are still hearing about the “sense of community” that people felt while strolling through the many tents visiting their neighbors and supporting our vendors. Proceeds from the day were donated to the Hillsdale Fire Company, Community Rescue Squad and the Roe Jan Food Pantry.

THIS YEAR: FIREWORKS!

In addition to the vendor’s area, the children’s tent, the bounce house, the kid’s maze trailer, all day entertainment-including live music, as well as physical comedian Pat Ferri, merchant raffle, and all day food, this year we will be adding many new attractions. We will have a FIREMAN’S MUSTER starting at 2 PM. The Hillsdale Fire Company will have a BEEF BBQ starting at 5 PM, DJ and KARAOKE entertainment at 7pm, and a grand finale for the day will be a FIREWORKS DISPLAY at 9:30 pm.  We encourage all vendors to stay and enjoy the evening with us as we expect a big crowd for the evening’s events.

Bring a sample of water from home and spend some time in the “kitchen” on Kitchen Chemistry Day.  We’ll experiment to reveal what is in the water you drink every day at home, and compare it to household items and water from the Roeliff Jansen Creek.

The Roeliff Jansen Community Library’s annual BBQ and Silent Auction will be held at the Roe Jan Park again this year. At the Sunday afternoon August 1 event, area residents and visitors will enjoy barbecue by Kenny Preusser and music by a local group, and will be able to bid on many unique and interesting services and items at the silent auction. Sponsored by the library’s Capital Campaign, “BBQ, Boogie & Bid at the Park” is a fundraiser for the new building fund.
 
The BBQ will be served from noon till 3:30 pm. On the menu is pulled pork and barbecued chicken, grilled veggies, coleslaw, corn on the cob and potato salad. Dessert will be brownies made by members of the library’s Friends organization and Stewart’s ice cream. Seating will be available in the shed barn or diners can bring lawn chairs and blankets to spread out on the lawn
 
Among the items to be offered are at the silent auction are signed books by local authors, an original creation by famed sculptor Leon Smith, as well as art work, photography and ceramics by other local artists; an authentic Chinese dinner for six cooked in your home; a four week writer’s workshop for up to four people with Le Anne Schreiber, former deputy editor of the New York Times Book Review and author of two critically-acclaimed memoirs; four tickets to a Disney show on Broadway, a magnum of wine, antique area maps, a pair of stylish Wellie boots, and many other items and services
 
Tickets, $20 for adults and $10 for kids, will be available as of July 2 at the Roe Jan Community Library, B&G Wine and Gourmet in Hillsdale; the Copake Pharmacy; the Farmer’s Wife in Ancramdale and from members of the library Board of Trustees and Capital Campaign Steering Committee. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The weather promises to be fine this Saturday night when the Hamlet Park will be turned into a “Walk-In Theater!”

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and stretch out under the stars to see Disney’s The Lion King on the big pop-up screen. There will even be free popcorn. A heroic coming-of-age story, the movie follows the epic adventures of a young lion cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role as king of the jungle. Free fun for the whole family thanks to the Hillsdale Hamlet Committee and the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.

Tickets $20 in advance, $25 the day of the tour.
