The Emerald Trio at the Church

Playing works by Telemann, Piazzola, Martinu, and a suite of popular Broadway songs arranged specifically for this group…

The Emerald Trio was founded in 2007 by Karen Bogardus (flute), Orlando Wells (violin/ viola), and Matt Castle (piano). Though their backgrounds and careers are varied – playing in Symphony, Opera, Broadway, and Jazz ensembles as well as conducting, composing, orchestrating, singing, and acting – they are united by their passion for contemporary chamber music.

Married couple Karen and Orlando had long dreamed of playing chamber music together but were limited by the lack of repertoire for their instruments as a duo. In 2005 they met Matt Castle and found they had immediate musical chemistry. They began their collaboration by reading works by Nino Rota, Jacques Ibert, Reynaldo Hahn, Paul Creston, and other 20th century composers. In 2007 they gave their first recital as the Emerald Trio, and now their repertoire includes 19 new works, almost all of which were written specifically for them.

In 2010 the trio won first prize in the Continuo Arts Foundation Carnegie Hall Debut Competition. Their 2012 performance on Trinity Church’s Concert at One Series received a glowing review from Delarue on Lucid Culture. They frequently perform in chamber music series in Connecticut, Vermont, Virginia, and New York State, as well as Manhattan venues such as Actors’ Chapel, Trinity Church, and the 92nd Street Y.

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Rheinstrom Hill Community Foundation.
