SUMMARY:Hester Velmans Speaks on Her Book Slipper at Library
DESCRIPTION:As part of Women’s History Month\, local author Hester Velmans will speak on her book Slipper\, a retelling of the Cinderella story\, at Roeliff Jansen Community Library\, on Saturday\, March 23\, at 4 pm. \nVelmans says\, “The fairy tale is the frame on which I set out to hang a more realistic story—what might really have happened to someone living in the 17th Century …. I was interested in the essence of Cinderella—the romantic longing\, the childhood / adolescent dream that some day you’ll be recognized as someone more special than you are now—but without the magic.” \nReviewers say: “Part romantic love story\, part fairy tale\, part feminist commentary\, this is a wonderful\, old fashioned novel to be savored.”— Daniel Klein\, best-selling author.   “A satisfying blend of history and myth that breathes new life into Cinderella.”  —Kirkus Reviews \nHester Velmans is a novelist and translator of literary fiction. Born in Amsterdam\, she has lived in Europe and New York City. After a career in TV news\, she moved to Western Massachusetts to devote herself to writing. Her children’s book\, Isabel of the Whales\, was a national bestseller.  She is a recipient of the Vondel Prize for Translation and a National Endowment of the Arts Translation Fellowship.

SUMMARY:US Women in Office: Critical Mass vs. Critical Actors
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Women’s History Month by joining us at Roe Jan Community Library for a talk and discussion with Dr. Ellen Boneparth on the difference women make and the significance of the increasing number of women in political office. \nIn recent years\, we’ve often heard about elections as launching the “year of the woman.” Is this hype or are women really changing the U.S. political landscape? When we consider this question\, we need to look at two developments. First\, are there enough women in office to provide a critical mass that will change the way legislatures function? Second\, are newly elected women office holders critical actors ready to make change? If so\, what about them makes them different from the past? And\, if our 2018 election was\, indeed\, significant\, how and why? \nDr. Boneparth received her PhD from Stanford University and has taught at various instituations including the University of Hawaii\, Hilo\, where she was also a dean. She was an early pioneer in the study of women in politics and edited one of the first readers in the field. In a second career\, she worked as a diplomat in the U.S\, Foreign Service and served in Athens\, Greece. She now lives in Washington\, DC\, has written a number of novels\, and leads a nonprofit she founded for aid to women in developing countries. She continues to be active in electoral politics.
