SUMMARY:Reading and Discussion Program: The Serious Side of Food at Library
DESCRIPTION:The Roe Jan Community Library presents a 7 session Reading and Discussion program\, “The Serious Side of Food\,” facilitated by Tessa Edick of FarmOn! Foundation based in Copake.  The program will meet Tuesdays: April 2\, 16\, 30\, May 14\, 28\, June 11\, 25\, from 6:00-8:30pm. Participants should plan on attending all 7 sessions. \nWith texts selected by noted restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton\, the series will explore an aspect of our culture that often gets taken for granted: food. Food provides both nourishment and pleasure\, of course\, but under the surface of each meal lies a series of complex interactions and entanglements. Working with histories\, novels\, and journalism\, this series exposes some of the issues that lie on our plates. Texts include historical accounts\, novels\, and narrative nonfiction. \nTessa Edick is founder and director of FarmOn! Foundation\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.  FarmOn! seeks to promote honest and responsible food\, combine agricultural and entrepreneurial training for the next generation of farmers and create impactful food experiences.  The foundation owns and runs the 217-acre Empire Farm in Copake and hosts events and programs. \nParticipants in the library program should plan on attending all 7 sessions. Space is limited. Register by visiting the library or calling 518-325-4101. Several copies of the books for discussion are available to borrow. The reading list can be found at https://humanitiesny.org/our-work/programs/reading-discussion/the-serious-side-of-food/. \nThis program is funded by a grant from Humanities NY.

SUMMARY:Hudson Poet Rebecca Wolff at Library
DESCRIPTION:Hudson poet Rebecca Wolff will read from her most recent collection\, One Morning (Wave Books\, 2015)\, and from new work\, on Saturday\, April 6\, 4:00 – 5:30 pm. Wolff’s reading\, followed by discussion\, is part of Roeliff Jansen Community Library’s Poetry Month Celebration. \nWolff describes the work she will read as “lyric\, personal\, political\, often ekphrastic poems written in the unconsciousness leading up to our 2016 election and in the wake of awakeness after.” \nRebecca Wolff is the author of four poetry collections\, one novel\, and many works of prose. Her first book\, Manderley\, was selected for the National Poetry Series by Robert Pinsky. Her second\, Figment\, was selected for the Barnard Women Poets Prize by Claudia Rankine and Eavan Boland. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Wolff founded the literary journal Fence and Fence Books and launched The Constant Critic website. She lives in Hudson\, New York\, and is currently a fellow at the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany.

SUMMARY:Mirror Visions Ensemble returns to the Library
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mirror Visions Ensemble for a sung celebration of America–in all its complicated glory. Their songs soar with music from classical American composers\, and also from historically marginalized American groups. Those who sing about America have long found causes for cynicism and celebration\, parody and patriotism\, resistance and reverence. And all of them are saying\, in their own way\, this land is ours. \nPerformers Justine Aronson\, mezzo-soprano\, Scott Murphree\, tenor\, Mischa Bouvier\, baritone\, and Grant Wenaus\, piano will sing of urban\, suburban\, and rural life – its moods\, landscapes and sounds. The program features music by immigrants (Kurt Weill\, Paul Hindemith\, Hanns Eisler\, and Erich Korngold)\, women (Ruth Crawford Seeger\, Francine Trester)\, and African Americans (Adolphus Hailstork\, Brittney Boykin\, Florence Price and Leslie Adams)\, as well as by classic American composers (Charles Ives\, Leonard Bernstein\, Samuel Barber\, and Pete Seeger). \nMirror Visions Ensemble was founded 27 years ago with a desire to explore the relationship between music and text\, initially through the creation of “mirror visions” — settings of the same text to music by different composers. The group’s passion for storytelling has produced thematic concerts on surprising subjects. \nThis concert is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Hidden History of the Roe Jan Region at RJHS
DESCRIPTION:In advance of the Roeliff Jansen Historical Society’s Summer Exhibit\, The Hidden History of the Roe Jan Region\, Jon Strom will provide a preview of how seemingly unrelated topics like maps\, lawlessness and prizefighting coalesced to literally shape the history and geography of the area. \nAs part of this hidden history\, learn why the triangular piece of land originally called Boston Corner became a “city of refuge” for criminals fleeing the reach of the law\, and how a long narrow tract of land\, known as The Oblong\, abolished slavery nearly 100 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

SUMMARY:Master Gardener Tim Kennelty at Library
DESCRIPTION:Tim Kennelty\, Master Gardener\, Discusses the Problems Posed by Invasive Plants and their Solutions at Roe Jan Library on Sunday\, April 28 at 3 pm. \nMaster gardener and naturalist Tim Kennelty will discuss invasive plants in our region and how we can help protect our environment from them. Invasive species have become a major environmental problem\, as they outcompete and displace native vegetation and damage local habitats by reducing biodiversity. Learn about the problems caused by invasive plants\, which species are invasive\, and how to identify and manage them in the landscape. The top local invasive plant species will be covered\, as well as where to report invasive species populations\, and how to get involved in local volunteer projects. \nTim Kennelty is a Master Gardener and Master Naturalist through Cornell Cooperative Extension and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Columbia Land Conservancy. He has gardened in Columbia County for more than 25 years and has developed a passion for preserving native species and combating exotic invasive plants. He has been involved in a multi-year habitat restoration project at the Siegel-Kline Kill public conservation area in Ghent\, New York.

SUMMARY:Classic American Songbook Jazz at the Church
DESCRIPTION:The Uncertainty Principal\, a group of local mostly amateur musicians who have had solid careers outside of music\, returns to this music series by popular demand. With one exception\, these players are just learning to improvise\, hence the ‘uncertainty’ but they will certainly provide the audience with an entertaining afternoon. \n“The uncertainty principle is one of the most famous (and probably misunderstood) ideas in physics. It tells us that there is a fuzziness in nature\, a fundamental limit to what we can know about the behaviour of quantum particles and\, therefore\, the smallest scales of nature. Of these scales\, the most we can hope for is to calculate probabilities for where things are and how they will behave. Unlike Isaac Newton’s clockwork universe\, where everything follows clear-cut laws on how to move and prediction is easy if you know the starting conditions\, the uncertainty principle enshrines a level of fuzziness into quantum theory.” – Alok Jha\, The Guardian on A Short History of Equations. \nSunday\, April 28\, 4 pm \nSuggested Donation: $10 at the door \nFirst United Methodist Church of Hillsdale \nState Highway 23 and State Route 22\, Hillsdale\, NY 12529 \nThis program is made possible in part by a grant from the Rheinstrom Hill Community Foundation.
