Reading and Discussion Program: The Serious Side of Food at Library

April 2, 2019@6:00 pm-8:30 pm

The Roe Jan Community Library presents a 7 session Reading and Discussion program, “The Serious Side of Food,” facilitated by Tessa Edick of FarmOn! Foundation based in Copake.  The program will meet Tuesdays: April 2, 16, 30, May 14, 28, June 11, 25, from 6:00-8:30pm. Participants should plan on attending all 7 sessions.

With texts selected by noted restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton, the series will explore an aspect of our culture that often gets taken for granted: food. Food provides both nourishment and pleasure, of course, but under the surface of each meal lies a series of complex interactions and entanglements. Working with histories, novels, and journalism, this series exposes some of the issues that lie on our plates. Texts include historical accounts, novels, and narrative nonfiction.

Tessa Edick is founder and director of FarmOn! Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.  FarmOn! seeks to promote honest and responsible food, combine agricultural and entrepreneurial training for the next generation of farmers and create impactful food experiences.  The foundation owns and runs the 217-acre Empire Farm in Copake and hosts events and programs.

Participants in the library program should plan on attending all 7 sessions. Space is limited. Register by visiting the library or calling 518-325-4101. Several copies of the books for discussion are available to borrow. The reading list can be found at https://humanitiesny.org/our-work/programs/reading-discussion/the-serious-side-of-food/.

This program is funded by a grant from Humanities NY.
